Cultural Challenge: Teaching Mathematics to Non-mathematicians

چکیده
A “mathematics for non-mathematicians” course, commonly known as a “service” course is an undergraduate mathematics developed students who are not (going to become) majors. Besides calculus, such courses may include linear algebra, mathematical reasoning, differential equations, programming and modeling, discrete mathematics, teachers, so on. In this article we argue that good, productive curricular design teaching of service happen through meaningful collaboration between instructor the department whose taking course. This ensures “non-mathematicians” see relevance learning their discipline (say, by discussing authentic problems examples), but also appreciate benefits which brings overall education skills set.

Mathematics, Mathematicians, and Mathematics Education
I am one of a growing number of research mathematicians who are substantially engaged with school mathematics education. Such outreach has a long and honorable tradition. In this lecture, I illustrate some of the ways that I think this can be helpful, and even essential. Upon his retirement in 1990 as president of the ICMI, Jean Pierre Kahane spoke perceptively of the intimate connection betwee...
متن کاملTeaching Mathematics to Non-Mathematics Majors Through Applications
This article focuses on the important role of applications in teaching mathematics to students with career paths other than mathematics. These include the fields as diverse as education, engineering, business, and life sciences. Particular attention is given to instructional computing as a means for concept development in mathematics education courses and the role of interdisciplinary projects ...
متن کاملTeaching Mathematics to Software Engineers
Based on my experience in teaching formal methods to practicing and aspiring software engineers, I present some of the common stumbling blocks faced when writing formal speciications. The most conspicuous problem is learning to abstract. I address all these problems indirectly by giving a list of hints to speciiers. Thus this paper should be of interest not only to teachers of formal methods bu...
متن کاملTeaching Mathematics to Engineering Students*
Some new ideas in teaching mathematics to engineering students and the implementation of these ideas into the teaching of mechanical engineering students at Brighton University are discussed. The importance of explaining to the students why knowledge of mathematics is essential for their future practical work is emphasized. Mathematics is a language for expressing physical, chemical and enginee...
